Hello everyone! Lately it has come to my attention that a lot of the artists that I cover here are male, and that is in fact true. There are many more male artists that have been popularized and have been seen as pioneers of their time, so today I want to highlight an artist that we have in our upcoming January 6th Fine Art and Estate Auction. We’re travelling to India to celebrate an amazing female artist, B. Prabha! Prabha entered the art world when few Indian women were involved professionally and during a time when women were openly oppressed. Prabha grew up in a small village which proved to be one of the greatest influences in her work. As an artist she captured rural lives of woman with explorations of society, identity, and gender equality with a large focus on the experiences of Indian women. Prabha’s first exhibition was with her husband and fellow artist B. Vithal, going on to win first prize at the Maharashtra State Art Exhibition in 1958. Following this, Prabha was fortunate enough to be able to exhibit here worth in more than fifty exhibitions both inside and outside of India. In 1993, Prabha held a solo exhibition titled ‘Shradhanjali’ in honor of her late husband. The work that will be featured in our upcoming auction is a depiction of a mother and child comprised of rich red and orange enhancing the warmth and tenderness of the scene. The soft smile on the mother’s lips as she looks upon her laughing child has been perfectly captured in an intimate moment. Although Prabha wanted to showcase the plight of women, she was able to capture beautiful moments such as scene as well. In the upcoming year I hope to highlight more prolific female artists for more people to discover and grow fond of. Woman in the arts will hopefully become just as prominent as their male counterparts, but until then I’ll continue to promote them as they enter our doors. If you have any artwork made by women or have a B. Prabha of your own that you would like us to look at, I’d love to research them! Happy holidays and see you all next year!
